Coffee is, for many people, a way of life. Once a person has sampled the best brews, taken to grinding their own beans, and know what the difference between a flat white and a breve are, they have to start asking themselves “what’s next.”
The answer is coffee roasting.

Step one to becoming amazing at coffee roasting is picking a good green coffee. The cool part about roasting coffee at home is that it doesn’t cost as much. Bad Bean Coffee bought their green coffee for about five dollars a pound. Compare this to premium coffee that is roasted at a coffee shop, and it looks something more like fifteen dollars a pound. The best way to ensure quality green coffee is to read up on the company. “Organic” and “free trade” are great words to look for.
From there, the next choice is in roasting tools. All that is really needed is a wok and a spoon. That, or a baking sheet with perforations and an oven. There’s even a trend of people using popcorn air poppers to roast at home.
The process of roasting amazing premium coffee at home isn’t rocket science, and it’s something that can be done in a day. It does take some involvement on the roaster’s part – but that attention to detail and micromanagement is what’s going to make an incredible coffee roaster!

-Pay close attention to temperature. A thermometer might be handy. If used, the thermometer should be held about an inch away from the coffee beans. It’s not necessary though; the roasting process can be gauged by smell.
-It’s vital to keep an eye on the beans to know when the “first crack” appears in their skins. This is important for determining when to adjust the heat. So, coffee roasting on stove top isn’t something that can be done without supervising the process.
-When the roasting process is done, the beans should cool in a colander. If left in the wok or popper, they will continue to roast past the point of perfection.
-They beans cannot be ground immediately post-roast. They need to sit for at least twelve hours. It can be tempting to taste the amazing coffee sooner, but the cool time is important.
